| ブロードウェイBroadwayという地名どおり、幅広の目抜き通りHigh Streetが印象的な北コッツウォルズの村です。この村の愉しみはなんといってもショッピングです。目抜き通りに沿って、それはそれは、ハニーカラーの素敵なお店が肩を寄せ合って並んでいます。ギフトショップをはじめ、コッツウォルズらしいアンティークショップ、駄菓子屋さん、縫いぐるみ屋さんなど、見るだけでもあっという間に時間が過ぎてしまいます。ショッピングに疲れたら、ティー・ルームで休憩です。 写真上段は、ブロードウェイ村の南東側の丘陵Broadway Hillを登った高台に位置するブロードウェイ塔Broadway Towerです。この日は典型的なブリティッシュ・ウェザーに一日中悩まされた日で、夕方になってようやく雲が切れてきました。急いでヒドコート・マナーからブロードウェー・タワーに車を走らせ、辺りの草原を見渡せば観光客の姿は既に見当たらず数頭の牡鹿がいるだけで、ロンドン在住のカメラマンさんと僕とそして数頭の鹿たちだけでこの光の劇を鑑賞しました。もしもブロードウェイに宿泊される方は、夕方ここまで散歩してみるのもいいかも。運がよければ今日のように太陽が沈む方向に、黄金色に輝くブロードウェイの街並みを見下ろせます(写真では塔を入れたため街並みが写っていませんが、この場所はコッツウォルズ丘陵の西の縁にあたり正面の丘からはとても眺望がよい) |
