| 下手に知識があると変な先入観を持ってしまいますが、いたってそんなこととは無縁の長閑な村です。まあ、そういった意味はないにせよ、日本では考えられませんね。こういったところも英国らしいのでしょうか？なお、Slaughterとは、アングロ・サクソン語のslohtreからだそうです。つまり、近代英語の沼地を意味するSloughという意味です。そういえば、ヒースロー空港の近くにSloughっていう比較的大きな町がありますが、あの辺りは昔、沼地だったんでしょうかね？あの町には、私がお世話になっている、ペンタックスPENTAX英国の本社があって、たしか、次の日にカメラの部品を購入するために行きました。今考えると、Slough繋がりだったんですかね。 それはさておき、この風景は、よくコッツウォルズCotswoldsで絵葉書なんかを購入すると、載っている比較的有名な場所ですが、観光客の姿は、まばらです。すぐ隣村に、コッツウォルズ巡りツアーの観光バスが、必ずといっていいほど立ち寄る、ボートン・オン・ザ・ウォーター村Bourton-on-the-Waterがありますが、そこからやって来ると、なんだか都会から田舎に来た気さえしてきます。ツアーだとなかなか難しいかもしれませんが、やはり英国の魅力は、田園風景と田舎の村。お時間がありましたら、散歩がてら、ちょっと立ち寄ってみませんか。赤レンガの煙突が印象的な水車小屋の近くで、アイスクリームでもほおばりながら、アイ川で気持ちよさそうに泳いでいる水鳥でも、ぼうっーと眺めてみませんか。なにもない、なにもすることがない、それこそ魅力的なことだと思いませんか。 |
